Brooklyn Bedding is a true family business; brothers John and Rob Merwin started the business in 1995 and did deliveries out of the back of a Wonder Bread truck. The business later evolved to selling mattresses on Amazon and then to providing direct sales through its current website. In 2008, John witnessed three men roll a mattress and pack it into a box during a trip to China, which inspired Brooklyn’s Bedding to transition to launching the bed in the box concept. Today, Brooklyn’s bedding offers quality American-made mattresses online, and its main line includes six memory foam and hybrid mattresses. The company also offers a variety of bedding and bed frames and foundations.
The Zoned mattress launched in 2018 at the Las Vegas Market. This hybrid mattress is designed for side sleepers and its contouring zones offer side sleepers support in the specific areas where they need it most: the center of the bed and at the shoulders and hips. This mattress features multiple layers of memory foam as well as an 8-inch support core consisting of 1,189 individually wrapped coils to create optimum spinal alignment.
With this Zoned mattress review, we’ll cover everything you need to know before deciding if this mattress is right for you.

Zoned Mattress Sizing and Pricing

The Zoned mattress comes in a medium firmness or a 5 out of the 1-10 firmness rating system used throughout the industry. This firmness is excellent for supporting the sleeper's hips and shoulders while promoting spinal alignment. As a medium-level firm hybrid bed, this mattress won't offer the complete “sinking in” feeling of a full memory foam mattress.
This mattress is available to buyers within all 50 states and in Canada. Shipping is free to the contiguous 48 states, but shipping charges apply to buyers in Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. Most mattresses ship with FedEx Ground, though mattresses shipping to Canada are shipped via UPS.
The Zoned mattress is currently only offered directly through Brooklyn Bedding’s websites and showrooms.
This mattress is made of four different layers to provide contouring support. The base layer consists of 2-inch high-density foam, and is topped by an 8” core of 1,189 Quantum Edge coils. These coils are individually encased and create three zones to support spinal alignment. The middle zone of coils is firmer for optimum support, while contouring zones in the top and lower thirds support your upper torso and legs.
The coils are topped with a 2-inch layer of TitanFlex foam, which creates further contouring and helps to relieve pressure points. The comfort layer of 1-inch quilted, gel memory foam increases your comfort and keeps the mattress cool.
This mattress ships free with FedEx Ground to the contiguous 48 states. Shipping is also available to Alaska and Hawaii, and rates start at $125 per mattress. Shipping to Canada is done through UPS and starts at $250 per mattress. The mattress is compressed, wrapped in plastic, and packed in a cardboard box. United States purchases are delivered within 3 to 4 business days. Assembly consists of unwrapping the mattress and letting it expand. Brooklyn Bedding recommends that you let a mattress air out for 3 to 5 hours before using it.
Brooklyn Bedding does not offer white glove delivery or removal of old mattresses.
Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120-night trial on the Zoned mattress. If you decide that the mattress isn’t right for you, contact customer service for a full refund. In most cases, the company requests that buyers donate their mattresses instead of shipping them back to the company.
The Zoned mattress comes with a full 10-year warranty. This warranty covers issues like defects in the foam, defects resulting in splitting or cracking, body indentations that result in an indentation greater than 1” deep, and sagging. (Mattresses must be supported by a foundation that offers solid support.)
Zoned Mattress Performance
Because this mattress features a layer of coils, it offers less motion isolation than a full memory foam mattress does. However, with the two top layers being made of memory foam, this mattress isolates more motion than an innerspring mattress does. If great motion isolation is a top priority for you, this mattress probably isn’t the right choice.
Thanks to the layer of individually wrapped coils, this mattress has substantial edge support and has more durable edges than a full memory foam mattress.
Memory foam tends to retain heat, but this mattress has a few positives going for it. The top 1-inch layer of quilted memory foam includes a gel that cools the mattress as you sleep. The inclusion of a coil layer also serves to circulate air through the mattress. This 8-inch coil support core means this mattress sleeps cooler than it would if it were only made of foam.
Memory foam generates a faint off-gassing smell when unwrapped. This mattress has minimal off-gassing and most buyers have found that the smell dissipates within 24 hours. The mattress is made with non-toxic foams and the natural odor is harmless.
Not only does the Zoned mattress provide generous support, it does so in targeted areas where side sleepers need that support the most. The coils are divided into multiple zones to provide appropriate support to different parts of the body, with the middle zone being 48% firmer to position the body for optimal spinal alignment.
This entire mattress has been designed to offer contouring and conforming properties for side sleepers. The multiple layers of memory foam offer the same conforming and pressure point relief that memory foam is known for, but this mattress’ coil layer enhances the mattress’s ability to conform to a body’s shape and weight. The coils are arranged into different zones, with the upper and bottom third zones contouring to the shape of a side sleeper’s body. This makes for a mattress that supports and contours to the shape of a side sleeper’s body.
The Zoned mattress is made from premium materials and the inclusion of 1,189 individually wrapped coils enhances its durability beyond the typical durability of a full memory foam mattress. This mattress is also backed by a 10-year full warranty which is evidence of the confidence that Brooklyn Bedding has in this mattress.
While the memory foam comfort layers of this mattress do prevent motion transfer and can make it a bit more difficult to move, the coil layer means that this mattress still offers plenty of support and has some bounce to it. This mattress’ hybrid design means it’s still easy to move around, and the blend of materials makes the mattress quieter than a typical innerspring, too.
The 1,189 coils in this mattress can generate noise, but that noise is minimal because the coils are individually wrapped. The memory foam comfort layer also helps to muffle noise and allows you to adjust positions quietly. While this mattress is louder than some mattresses made entirely of memory foam, it is quieter than a traditional innerspring.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a Zoned Mattress?
Side Sleepers: Side sleepers face a number of challenges in getting and staying comfortable, and the Zoned mattress is designed to overcome those problems -- it's actually marketed by Brooklyn Bedding as engineered for side sleepers. With contoured zones and enhanced support through the middle third of the mattress, the Zoned mattress offers the support that side sleepers need to achieve optimal spinal alignment throughout the night. Because the upper third and bottom third of the mattress contour, the mattress relieves the pressure points that side sleepers often feel in their knees, ankles, and shoulders.
Back Sleepers: Many back sleepers will probably also find the Zoned mattress comfortable, especially because of the support that it provides to the lower back during the night. Heavier sleepers who are also back sleepers may find that the upper and bottom thirds of the mattress are too soft, leaving them lacking adequate support.
Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers may find this mattress comfortable because of the support provided in the middle third of the mattress. Many other mattresses lack this support, and stomach sleepers may feel like their torso sinks too deeply into those mattresses. The Zoned mattress can be comfortable for lighter and medium-weight stomach sleepers, but heavier sleepers may find it lacks support.

If you’re a side sleeper who wakes up with a sore lower back or experiences shoulder, knee, or ankle pain, the Zoned mattress could improve the quality of your sleep. This mattress’s innovative design is what side sleepers have been waiting for: A mattress that relieves pressure points on the shoulder, knee, and ankle, and that offers adequate support to the hips and torso so that your back doesn’t sag down into the mattress. By creating optimal spinal alignment through the night, this mattress can help to reduce pain and help side sleepers to get a better quality night’s rest.
While this mattress may strongly appeal to side sleepers, partners who aren’t side sleepers can still enjoy the mattress comfortably. Unfortunately, this mattress is available in only one firmness, but with a generous 120-night sleep trial, you can see if the Zoned mattress is right for you. Brooklyn Bedding makes all of its mattresses right here in the United States, and while this mattress costs a little more than some other hybrid mattresses from competitors, its overall quality justifies that higher price.
