After gaining attention with a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, Purple launched in 2015, selling its innovative mattress directly to consumers online.
What makes the Purple mattress innovative is the Purple Grid, a specialty comfort layer that is composed of a proprietary material called a Hyper-Elastic Polymer. The Purple Grid delivers a sleeping experience that is both highly responsive and extremely resilient, offering customers a distinct feel from other mattresses on the market.
In the Purple mattress, the Purple Grid is layered above a foam transition layer and foam support core. Since their initial launch, Purple has introduced the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses. These new products replace the foam support core with foam-encased innerspring coils. In addition to their mattresses, Purple has rolled out an extended line of products including pillows, bedding, and bedroom furniture.
Customers nationwide have come to love the Purple mattress, and its popularity continues to grow. If you’re intrigued by how the Purple can improve your sleep, our full review below goes into detail about everything you need to know.

Firmness closely related to comfort and is a way of describing how hard or soft a mattress feels. While this is subjective, a 1-10 scale (with 1 being the softest and 10 the hardest) is used to give a general idea of the feel of a mattress.
The Purple mattress is Medium Firm and falls between a 6 and 7 on the firmness scale. At the same time, the feel of the Purple mattress is unique because of the distinct properties of the Purple Grid.
The Purple mattress is available online through the Purple website as well as on Amazon. Purple has partnerships with Mattress Firm and Macy’s, both large national retailers, to offer their beds in those stores. If you want to see a Purple mattress in person, you can use the Store Locator on the Purple website.
The Purple mattress is not your typical foam mattress. A unique material -- the company’s proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer -- forms the Purple Grid, a material that generates a different sleep experience than other foam or latex materials on the market.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer is non-toxic, and the foams supporting it are CertiPUR-US certified to be made without harmful chemicals.
The interior construction of the Purple bed consists of three layers:
- The top layer is 2 inches of the Purple Grid made with the company’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
- The second layer is 3.25 inches of transition polyfoam with medium softness and a density of 1.8 pounds per cubic foot (PCF).
- The third layer is the support core, and it is made with 4 inches of support polyfoam that has a density of 2 PCF.
The cover of the Purple mattress is made of a knit fabric (29% Viscose, 67% Polyester, 4% Lycra) that is stretchy, soft, and breathable. The bottom of the mattress is non-slip and made with 100% polyester.
Purple offers free standard shipping by FedEx anywhere in the 48 contiguous United States.
Standard shipping brings the mattress to your doorstep as a bed-in-a-box. Inside the box, the Purple mattress is compressed inside plastic packaging. Once you bring the box into your bedroom and remove the packaging, the mattress will quickly expand to reach its full size.
Purple offers shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada for an extra charge. Canadian customers also pay a higher price that reflects duties and customs fees. Customers in some Canadian provinces may need to pay additional local taxes.
At this time, Purple does not offer international shipping to countries other than Canada.
For the Purple mattress, the company does not offer any installation, white-glove delivery, or old mattress haul-away services. These services are available for the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses.
Different delivery or installation services may be available if you choose to purchase a Purple mattress from Mattress Firm or Macy’s retail stores.
When purchasing the Purple mattress from their website, the mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial. Part of the trial requires that you keep the Purple mattress for at least 21 nights before making a return. After 21 nights, you have the remainder of the trial to initiate a return for a full refund. If you make a return, the company will pick the mattress up from your home at no additional charge.
The sleep trial for the Purple mattress may be different if it is purchased from Amazon, Mattress Firm, or Macy’s because any purchase will be covered by the return policy of the retailer. For Amazon, the return window is usually 30 nights. Check with Mattress Firm and Macy’s directly for more information about returns, exchanges, and whether any restocking fees apply.
Mattresses purchased from Purple or a Purple-authorized seller are eligible for a 10-year warranty that protects against defects in workmanship and materials. If the mattress is found to be defective, Purple will repair or replace it at no cost.
The original purchaser must maintain the proof of purchase (including the date), the warranty document, and the law tags from the mattress to make a claim. The mattress must be used according to manufacturer instructions for a warranty claim to be valid. In addition, the purchaser is responsible for any transportation or shipping charges associated with the warranty claim.
Purple Mattress Performance
The Purple mattress has above-average motion isolation because of the way that the Purple Grid only compresses where weight is actually applied. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer that forms the Purple Grid bends to fit the body without transferring significant motion to other parts of the bed. Because it is bouncier and more resilient than traditional memory foam, it may not isolate motion as completely as that material, but it is still effective at preventing motion-based disturbances for the vast majority of couples.
Like most foam-based mattresses, the Purple mattress does not provide reinforced edges. Because of this, the comfort layer compresses when you sit or sleep close to the edge of the bed. This can make the surface feel unstable when you get too close to the outer perimeter.
The Purple mattress is a standout when it comes to temperature regulation. Unlike other foam mattress that can trap heat when they contour to the body, the Purple Grid permits cooling airflow that keeps you cool throughout the night. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer does not retain heat, and the resilience of the Purple Grid prevents excessive hug that could cause you to overheat. For these reasons, the Purple mattress is frequently praised by hot sleepers and is a top choice for them.
Like with most mattresses that have significant foam layers, you can expect a slight odor when you first unbox the Purple. However, customers rarely report this to be bothersome. Any odor that does arise should dissipate within a few hours to a few days as long as you leave the mattress in a well-ventilated room.
The Purple mattress’s Hyper-Elastic Polymer in the Purple Grid comfort system provides a supportive feel that captures aspects of both memory foam and latex. It is able to give proportional cushioning like memory foam, but it retains a bounce similar to latex. This allows the Purple Grid to relieve pressure points and to do so rapidly even as you adjust your sleeping position on top of the mattress.
In the Purple mattress, the Purple Grid is only two inches thick, and this may be problematic for some sleepers, especially those who have a body weight over 230 pounds. While the foam layer underneath the Purple Grid adds extra support, sleepers with a higher body weight may find that they don’t get quite enough support from the two inch comfort layer. Thicker layers of the Purple Grid are available in the Purple Hybrid and Hybrid Premier mattresses.
The Purple Grid is designed to conform to the body. The walls of the grid can collapse or spring back up to reduce pressure points, provide contouring, and promote alignment. The supporting foam layer adds some extra softness and support, helping to relieve pressure but without excessive sink.
The Purple mattress has only been on the market for a few years, so there is no data about its long-term durability. However, early reports from customers are promising, and the design of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer points toward a material that will stand up well to many years of nightly use. Dense foams in the supporting layers contribute to durability as well. For these reasons, we expect the Purple mattress to have an average lifespan of at least 6-8 years that is comparable to most all-foam beds.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer used in the Purple mattress’s comfort layer has a high level of resilience, meaning that it quickly rebounds to take its shape when you remove weight from it. This resilience makes it easier to move on top of the mattress, providing sufficient bounce for sex.
There are no noisy elements of the the Purple mattress. Neither the supporting foams nor the Purple Grid produce significant noise. As a result, the Purple mattress is an excellent choice for noise-sensitive customers.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a Purple Mattress?
Not every mattress is a great fit for every sleeper. Your sleeping position can directly affect how much you’ll be comfortable and supported on a mattress, and some sleepers will find the Purple to be more well-suited to their needs.
Side sleepers generally need a mattress that will provide sufficient contouring for pressure point relief, especially at the shoulders and hips. Because of its responsiveness, the Purple mattress can be a solid option for side sleepers. The Hyper-Elastic Polymer in the Purple Grid bends to adjust to the shape of the body, helping to cushion pressure points. The supporting foam transitional layer adds extra support to the Purple Grid. The one caveat is that some side sleepers of higher body weight may find that they sink too deeply and “bottom out” on the 2-inch thick comfort layer.
Back sleepers benefit from a mattress that is at least Medium Firm and that provides moderate conforming. The Purple mattress is Medium Firm, and the Purple Grid adjusts to fit your body based on how your weight is applied. People with a lower body weight won’t feel quite as much contouring, but overall, the Purple is a supportive and a fit comfort-wise for most back sleepers.
Stomach sleepers usually require a firmer bed that keeps their abdomen from sinking too far into the mattress. At the same time, the mattress must be responsive to keep the body properly cushioned. With its firmness and supportiveness, the Purple works well for most stomach sleepers under 230 pounds. Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may find that there is excessive sink and not quite enough support from the 2-inch comfort layer.

If you are ready to try a mattress with a specialty material and a unique feel, the Purple is a worthy option for you to consider. Its comfort system -- the Purple Grid made with a proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer -- offers a feel and performance that stands out from virtually any other mattress available on the market.
The benefits of the Purple Grid are its ability to contour to the body and relieve pressure points without causing excessive sink that can be uncomfortable and frustrating. In addition, the Purple Grid allows you to easily move on the mattress, which is a big selling point for people who prioritize sex and people who frequently shift their sleeping position at night (including combination sleepers).
The Purple mattress is a great pick for people who tend to sleep hot. The innovative design of the comfort system permits more airflow than all-foam beds, providing excellent temperature regulation.
Sleepers in most positions and body weights will find the Purple to be well-suited to their needs. Some sleepers over 230 pounds may find its 2-inch comfort system to be lacking in thickness, but overall, this is a mattress with excellent performance and broad appeal.
