Just a few years ago, Eight Sleep burst onto the scene with mattresses that featured a technology layer that could provide detailed sleep-tracking data to help optimize nightly rest. Now the company has upped its game with two mattresses: a revamped version of its Smart Bed and the Pod, a brand-new mattress with exciting features.

The Smart Bed and the Pod are all-foam mattresses that can relieve pressure points and offer a comfortable and supportive night’s sleep. Each mattress has a technology layer for sleep tracking, smart wake-up, and integration with the rest of your WiFi-enabled smart home.

The Pod goes a step further and incorporates a liquid-based active heating and cooling system that lets you keep the exact temperature that is best for your sleep. Even more, the Pod’s technology learns with every night’s sleep, allowing it to make automatic adjustments while you snooze.

With these new mattresses, Eight Sleep has further established itself as a leading company in incorporating powerful technology into mattress design and delivering the data and performance needed to take your sleep to the next level.

Firmness

Both the Smart Bed and the Pod have a medium firm feel around a 5.5-6 on the typical firmness scale. They are not offered in any other firmness levels.

Availability

Currently, the only place to purchase the Pod and Smart Bed is directly from Eight Sleep on their website.

Previous models of the Eight Sleep mattresses were sold through partners like Amazon and Walmart. The Pod will not be sold through these channels, and the newest model of the Smart Bed is not presently available from those retailers.

Eight Sleep does have a showroom in New York City where you can try out their mattresses. You can make an appointment to visit the showroom at https://nydemo.youcanbook.me/.

The only other place to see Eight Sleep products in person is at the Sleep Sherpa showroom in the Minneapolis area.

Construction

The Smart Bed and the Pod share some common features including all-foam construction and utilization of smart technology to optimize your sleep. However, there are differences in the specifics of their construction and in how their technology layer operates.

The Smart Bed

The cover of the Smart Bed is 100% polyester. This polyester exterior is part of the Smart Cover. The company’s technology layer sits directly underneath the polyester and features sensors to help track and manage your sleep.

Beneath the Smart Cover are three layers of foam.

  • The top layer is 2” of a responsive polyfoam.
  • The second layer is 4” of transition polyfoam.
  • The bottom layer is 4” of high-density support polyfoam.

The technology layer of the Smart Bed offers a number of features. Its sensors monitor both your sleep and your environment to provide feedback on your nightly sleep. The data can be analyzed to identify trends and areas for improving sleep quality.

The Smart Cover works as a sort of heated mattress pad as it can be set to warm up the bed.

The Smart Alarm in the cover can improve how you wake up each morning. The sensors detect when you are in light sleep and wake you up at that point so that you are less likely to be groggy or startled at the start of your day.

The Smart Bed’s technology layer has a dual-sided design, which means that the tracking and settings can be different for each side of the bed. That makes this cover especially useful for partners who have different preferences.

This technology can be integrated with Amazon Alexa and other WiFi-based smart home devices.

Control of the technology layer is through the company’s smartphone app that is available for both Android and iOS.

The Pod

The cover of the Pod is made with soft, knit cotton. Directly underneath this cotton is the company’s Active Grid, which includes sensors to track your sleep and small tubes through which heated or cooled water can move to adjust the bed’s temperature.

Underneath the Pod’s Smart Cover are four layers of foam.

  • The top layer is 2” of Luracor, a latex-alternative polyfoam.
  • The second layer is 2” of memory foam.
  • The third layer is 2” of transition polyfoam.
  • The fourth layer is 5” of high-density support polyfoam.

The Active Grid technology layer expands upon the offerings of the Smart Bed. Like that Smart Cover, it tracks detailed information about your sleep environment and your nightly sleep. With the Pod, each night that you use it, it gains more information about your habits and preferences and can be set to make automatic adjustments during the night.

The temperature regulation of the Pod goes further than the Smart Bed. The technology layer has an active heating and cooling system that ranges from 55 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. It controls the temperature by pumping heated or cooled water through small tubes in the Active Grid.

The Pod has a thermo alarm that can use the surface temperature of the bed to wake you up in the morning without the need for a loud alarm.

As with the Smart Bed’s technology layer, it can connect to an Amazon Echo and other smart home devices. It is controlled with the company’s app and comes designed for use by two people with each side of the bed controlled independently.

Shipping

Eight Sleep offers free shipping of both the Smart Bed and the Pod within the contiguous United States. No shipping is available to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or international addresses.

Both of these beds ship with two separate boxes. In one box is the compressed foam mattress. This box should be opened first. Once the mattress is removed from the packaging, it will expand: you can sleep on it immediately, but it may take 24 hours to reach its full size.

After the mattress is in place, the second box, which contains the technology layer components, should be opened and set up according to the included instructions.

It should be noted that the Pod can be ordered now, but first shipments will not begin until April 2019.

Additional Services

Eight Sleep does not offer any white glove services for installation of their mattress or for haul-away of an old mattress.

Sleep Trial

Both of the Eight Sleep mattresses come with a 100-night sleep trial. Once the mattress is delivered, you have 100 days to initiate a return.

If you want to return the mattress, you simply contact the company who will coordinate removal of the mattress for disposal or donation at no charge to you. You will receive a full refund of the original purchase price.

Warranty

Eight Sleep offers different warranty lengths for different components of their mattresses.

The foam layers of the Smart Bed and the Pod are covered by a 10-year limited warranty. During that time period, the company will repair or replace the foam if there is a defect in materials or workmanship.

The technology layer has a 1-year warranty providing for replacement or repair if there is a defect.

For both the foam and technology layers, the customer is responsible for any shipping or transportation costs related to a warranty claim.

Eight Sleep Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Each of the Eight Sleep mattresses is able to effectively isolate enough motion to prevent disturbances from movement during the night.

The latex-like polyfoam in the top layer of these mattresses has more bounce than traditional memory foam and will not isolate motion to the same extent, but it is unlikely to pose a problem for most people.

The Pod mattress, which includes 2” of memory foam, will provide a slightly higher amount of motion isolation.

Edge Support

Edge support in each of these mattresses is average to somewhat below average. The all-foam design does not have any reinforcements around the perimeter, and this allows the foam to compress noticeably, especially when sitting on the edge of the bed.

Heat Retention

Temperature regulation is a strength of both of the Eight Sleep mattresses but especially the Pod.

In the Smart Bed, the technology layer can heat you up, but it doesn’t have the ability to cool you down.

In the Pod, the water-based system can increase the temperature up to 115 degrees or provide active cooling down to 55 degrees. The Pod can also be set to auto-regulate during the night so that you don’t have to wake up to make any adjustments.

For both the Smart Bed and the Pod, each side of the mattress can be set to different levels, allowing each sleeper to take advantage of this technology to regulate their temperature at night.

Off-Gassing

Some initial smell can be expected from the foams in these mattresses, but this “new mattress smell” should fade away within a few hours after the bed is set up as long as your bedroom is well-ventilated.

Support

Both of these mattresses provide above-average levels of support. With responsive foams, they can cushion the body based on where the most pressure is applied and help to keep your spine properly aligned.

For sleepers with sharper pressure points or a higher body weight, the Pod will provide better support because it has 4” of foam, made up of two separate 2” layers, in its comfort layer.

Conforming

The Eight Sleep mattresses have enough give to accommodate pressure points, but they are not excessively conforming. They provide moderate hug and noticeable bounce, so there is minimal risk of feeling stuck in the mattress.

Durability

As both of these mattress models have been recently launched, there is no hard data to draw on regarding their durability. The materials and design of the mattresses, though, point to a lifespan of 6-8 years, which is similar to that of most foam mattresses.

One area of concern is the durability of the technology layer. The components, such as the sensors, may have a shorter lifespan than the mattress foams.

Sex

The topmost layer of each of the Eight Sleep mattresses is a latex-like polyfoam, which means that it has resilience and moderate bounce. As a result, these mattresses do not inhibit motion and should not pose any barriers to amorous activity.

How Do Customers Rate the Eight Sleep Mattresses?

Because Eight Sleep has re-launched their products, there are no customer reviews available for these specific offerings on the Eight Sleep website, on Amazon, or from Consumer Reports.

Eight Sleep Smart Bed

What Type of Sleeper is Suited to an Eight Sleep Mattress?

When shopping for a new mattress, your goal is to find the perfect fit. But because there are so many factors to think about, it can be tough to know which mattress is most likely to be the right match.

As a starting point, it can be helpful to consider two important criteria: sleeping position and body weight.

Side sleepers: when sleeping on your side, extra pressure is put on the hips and on the shoulders. A mattress has to be responsive enough to soften that impact and keep the rest of the body in line. For that reason, a medium firm mattress with at least moderate contouring is best. For higher-weight side sleepers, a thicker comfort layer can help maintain this support.

Both the Smart Bed and the Pod work well for most side sleepers. They have enough give to relieve pressure points without being overly soft. The Pod has two extra inches of comfort layer material, making it a better match for people over 230 pounds.

Back sleepers: for back sleepers, a mattress that is medium firm to firm generally delivers the best results. If the mattress is any softer, it is too easy for the midsection to sink down into the bed and distort the spine’s alignment. The risk of this excessive sink is higher for heavier back sleepers who typically need an even firmer mattress.

Both the Smart Bed and the Pod are good options for back sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or less. Back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds will likely find the Pod to be more supportive because of its thicker comfort layer. For those over 230 pounds, there may be insufficient firmness to provide needed support.

Stomach sleepers: people who sleep on their stomach need a firmer mattress to avoid feeling suffocated by the bed and to prevent the abdomen from depressing too far into the mattress. The higher the body weight of a stomach sleeper, generally the more firm the mattress needs to be to avoid this problem.

For the majority of stomach sleepers, the Smart Bed and the Pod will be too soft. The exception is for stomach sleepers who are 130 pounds or lighter as they can find good results with either of these mattresses because they do not run the same risk of sinking into the mattress.

Our Verdict

Eight Sleep has long led the way when it comes to integrating sleep tracking technology into mattresses, and they have upped the ante with the Pod and the Smart Bed.

On their own, the Smart Bed and the Pod provide an all-foam sleeping surface that can relieve pressure points and offer excellent comfort to sleepers in most positions. The technology layer is the icing on the cake.

For customers who want metrics about their sleep and the ability to easily connect their bedroom to their smart home, the Eight Sleep mattresses offer significant value.

These mattresses also stand out for their ability to promote a comfortable sleeping temperature. In particular, the Pod, with its liquid-based active heating and cooling element, gives you unprecedented control over your temperature through the night.
