Simmons enjoys a strong reputation in the mattress industry. While the name has changed over the years, the foundations of the Simmons company date back to 1871. Beautyrest, Simmons’s flagship brand, launched in 1925.
Simmons has two main mattress brands: Beautyrest and BeautySleep. Within the Beautyrest brand, there are multiple mattress collections, including Beautyrest Black, Beautyrest Platinum, Beautyrest Silver, Beautyrest Recharge, Beautyrest Exclusive, and Beautyrest Hybrid. Here we will focus exclusively on the Beautyrest Black collection mattresses currently available through the Beautyrest website. Other mattress options in the Beautyrest Black Collection may be available through other vendors.
The Beautyrest website has three mattress options in the Black collection: Original, Cooling, and Cooling+Comfort.
- Original: The Original mattress is constructed using four layers of comfort foam, which include half an inch of Plush Comfort Foam, one inch of Medium Comfort Foam, one and a half inches of Energy Foam, and half an inch of Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam. The support layer includes T3 Pocketed Coil® Technology and BeautyEdge®.
- Cooling: Like the Original mattress, the Cooling mattress uses four layers of comfort foam. However, these layers are constructed differently. The layers include half an inch of Plush Comfort Foam, one inch of Medium Comfort Foam, one inch of RightTemp™ Memory Foam, and one inch of Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam. The support system also uses Beautyrest’s T3 Pocketed Coil® Technology and BeautyEdge®.
- Cooling+Comfort: The Cooling+Comfort mattress uses five layers of comfort foam: three-quarters of an inch of GelTouch® Foam, one inch of Medium Comfort Foam, two inches of Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam, one inch of RightTemp™ Memory Foam, and one inch of Medium Comfort Foam. Like the Original and the Cooling mattresses, the support system uses Beautyrest’s T3 Pocketed Coil® Technology and BeautyEdge®.

Mattress firmness is a subjective measurement related to comfort. It is typically referred to on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being extremely soft and 10 being extremely firm.
The Original mattress and the Cooling mattress are Medium. We would rank them around a 6 on the firmness scale. Beautyrest calls the Cooling+Comfort mattress’s firmness “plush pillow top,” which we would consider Medium Soft, or approximately 4 on the firmness scale.
The Original, Cooling, and Cooling+Comfort mattresses are available online through the Beautyrest website. Beautyrest ships within the contiguous United States. Other mattresses in the Beautyrest Black collection are widely available through third-party retailers, including select mattress stores, furniture stores, and department stores.
The Original, Cooling, and Cool+Comfort mattresses all have support layers with T3 Pocketed Coil® Technology and BeautyEdge®. The cover of each mattress uses fabric that is made to feel cool to the touch. The construction of the comfort layers is the main factor that differentiates between the mattress designs.
- Original: The Original mattress’s comfort system includes four distinct layers: half an inch of Plush Comfort Foam, one inch of Medium Comfort Foam, one and a half inches of Energy Foam, and half an inch of Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam.
- Cooling: The comfort layers of the Cooling mattress include half an inch of Plush Comfort Foam, one inch of Medium Comfort Foam, one inch of RightTemp™ Memory Foam, and one inch of Beautyrest Gel Memory Foam.

Beautyrest Black Mattress Performance
The Original, Cooling, and Cooling+Comfort mattresses all use multiple layers of foam in their comfort systems. These foam layers isolate motion well. The Original and Cooling mattresses use four layers of foam, while the Cooling+Comfort mattress uses five layers of foam. While the innerspring layer still transfers some motion, the coils are pocketed to reduce the transfer of motion across the support layer.
We would expect the Cooling+Comfort mattress to isolate motion better than the Original and the Cooling mattresses because it is softer and uses a thicker comfort system.
All three mattresses have Beautyrest’s BeautyEdge® for extra edge support. This foam encasement wraps around the innerspring layer to reinforce the edge of the bed. While the foam in the top layers may compress when you near the edge of the bed, this edge support system prevents excessive sinking, making it easier to sit or sleep near the perimeter of the bed.
The memory foam in the Original, Cooling, and Cooling+Comfort mattresses may trap some heat. However, each mattress has cooling features to reduce heat retention, so they sleep cooler than many memory foam mattresses.
All three mattresses have covers that are cool to the touch. Their innerspring support layers allow greater airflow than solid foam support layers. The Original mattress’s BlackICE 4.0 system was developed for cooler sleeping. The Cooling mattress uses the same system, but it also incorporates RightTemp™ Memory Foam for additional cooling. The Cooling+Comfort mattress builds on the cooling properties of the Original and Cooling mattresses and adds GelTouch® Foam. This foam is fabricated for extra cooling airflow.
The extra cooling features in the Cooling and the Cooling+Comfort mattresses may make them sleep cooler than the Original mattress.
Foam often emits an initial odor. The Beautyrest Black collection uses foam in the comfort layers, so Beautyrest Black mattresses may let off a slight odor at first. This odor is not harmful, however, and it should air out within a couple of days if left in a well-ventilated area.
The Beautyrest Black collection’s combination of memory foam comfort layers and coils can encourage better spinal alignment.
The foam comfort layers contour to the body by compressing in response to body heat and weight. The innerspring layer gives deeper contouring for the heavier, wider parts of your body. Since the coils are individually-wrapped, they can move independently of each other for more precise support.
The conforming capabilities of the Beautyrest Black collection are greater than many mattresses. The Original, Cooling, and Cooling+Comfort mattresses all have comfort layers that include memory foam, which is known for its exceptional conforming. The innerspring layers pocketed coils move independently of each other for additional deep contouring.
The Cooling+Comfort mattress conforms more noticeably because it is softer and has a thicker comfort layer.
Based on materials, construction, and customer reviews, we would expect the Original, Cooling, and Cooling+Comfort mattresses to have a similar lifespan to many other innerspring mattresses, likely between 5 and 6 years.
The Beautyrest Black mattress models may be more conducive to sexual activity than most all-foam mattresses, but they are unlikely to perform as well in this category as innerspring and latex mattresses.
The innerspring coils give the Beautyrest Black mattresses bounce, which many couples find beneficial for sex. The conforming of the memory foam comfort layers, however, may impede movement across the surface of the bed. This effect may be more pronounced in the Cooling+Comfort mattress due to its softness and thicker comfort layers.
The Beautyrest Black mattress models are unlikely to be as quiet as most all-foam mattresses because the innerspring layer may occasionally squeak, pop, or clunk. However, the coils are individually-wrapped, which prevents some of the noise often associated with innerspring mattresses. While they are not completely silent, the Beautyrest Black mattresses will likely be quiet enough to satisfy most sleepers.

What Type of Sleeper Is Well Suited to a Beautyrest Black Mattress?
Side Sleepers: Mattresses in the Black collection pair foam comfort layers and innerspring support layers, which can relieve the pressure points side sleepers tend to experience. The comfort layers conform to the unique shape of each sleeper’s body, while the individually-pocketed coils contour more deeply. Side sleepers with particularly sharp pressure points may favor the extra softness and conforming of the Cooling+Comfort mattress.
Back Sleepers: Back sleepers generally benefit from a mattress that supports the spine while preventing heavier parts of the body, like the hips, from sinking in excessively. The Black collection’s contouring and conforming can provide the necessary spinal support. The firmness and thinner comfort layers in the Original and the Cooling mattresses may give them an edge over the Cooling+Comfort mattress when it comes to supporting back sleepers.
Stomach Sleepers: Stomach sleepers usually need a mattress that prevents their midsections from sinking in too much. Excessive sinking of the midsection can put the spine out of alignment, creating pain and pressure. The Original and Cooling models may provide an appropriate amount of support and softness for most stomach sleepers. However, they may be slightly too soft for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds and slightly too firm for stomach sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds. Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer the added softness of the Cooling+Comfort model.
